Statement about “Okotoks Growth Strategy” sent to CBC News

Statement from the Benjamin Shepherd Campaign sent to Helen Pike from CBC News:

“Many Okotoks residents, guided by a deep love for our town and a desire to be good stewards of what we have, are expressing strong concerns about the town’s rapid growth. In recent conversations & online discussions, people have shared with me their heartfelt worries about worsening traffic, stressed infrastructure, and the loss of our cherished small-town character. Parking & access to recreational facilities are particular painful experiences, with many feeling these needs are being overlooked by the existing council. There is a collective view that the Town’s current approach to growth does not reflect the ideals & standards of Okotokians. Residents I’ve talked with are hoping for a pause on population expansion and have a real yearning for a radical refocusing on improving infrastructure—especially parking & recreation— prioritizing the families who are already here. Many also feel that their voices are not being respected or truly heard in council meetings, which seems to have amplified frustration and a longing for more thoughtful, community-centered planning. As stewards of this town, we plead for wisdom and humility for all the leaders, and hope that future decisions will honour the ideals and well-being of everyone in Okotoks.”
